Most often a capacitor, contactor, or low refrigerant. Cheap fix if caught early.

Fan motor, compressor, or a loose part rattling against the cabinet. Worth a look before it cascades.
Outdoor unit not running
Capacitor is the usual suspect. Sometimes the disconnect, breaker, or thermostat wiring.
Short cycling
Unit kicks on for a minute, then off. Could be airflow, refrigerant charge, or a failing control board.
Water around the indoor unit
Condensate drain clogged or pan rusted. Easy if you catch it before it touches the drywall.
Power bill jumped
Refrigerant leak, dirty coil, or a failing component making the system work twice as hard.

Once we know the issue, you get a number. You decide whether to move forward. No work happens until you say go.
Repair vs. replace, honest
If you're 14 years deep on an R-22 system and the compressor's done, we'll tell you. Pouring $2,400 into a unit on its last leg isn't the favor you think it is.
